BodyWorks By Chandani is making efforts to be more environmentally friendly but at the studio and within the Virginia Beach community.  Although we know we are not able to go completely green at this time, we sure are making an effort to make a difference.  Join our Green Hip Scarf Club of belly dancers making our community more Green!

Our building doesn't provide recycling yet but the parent company is working on getting recycling for all of their properties.  Instead of waiting for them to offer it we are going ahead and providing recycling to our students now.

Currently we are recycling glass, plastic and aluminum with hopes to add paper and cardboard soon.

We are making an effort to reduce the amount of energy needed to run day to day operations.  We encourage staff and students to turn off lights when not in use.  We even try to use only half the lights that are needed to teach classes.  In addition we are not using the AC as much and students are enjoying the sweat factor of dancing.  Lastly as our light bulbs burn out, we are replacing them with energy efficient light bulbs

Using the tried and true method of water reduction, we have placed bricks in the toilet tanks to create low flow toilets.
Currently we are working on ways to provide drinking water without using plastic containers.  In the meantime we are using recyclable cups.

As a dance studio we often have hand outs for our students.  However we are making efforts to reduce the amount of paper we use by printing on both sides of the paper and using programs that allow us to email material instead of printing.
We also use recycled paper and print double sided for our handouts.  We are also in the process of creating an online registration program.

Students like to save green as well.  With these high gas prices, we all need to conserve a little more.  We are now offering lists for students who want to carpool to belly dance classes.  Students who participate in carpooling will get discounts on future classes.

Sometimes you just have to clean out your closets and that includes your belly dance closet.  What to do with all the pretty sparkly things?  BodyWorks By Chandani now offers a belly dance Consignment recycling program.  Now students can bring up to 5 items that they want to sell in the studio for up to 3 weeks at a time.

BodyWorks By Chandani has adopted the Linkhorn Elementary School Trail.  This beautiful trail is used by the elementary students for science classes, art classes and creative writing classes.
Adopt-a-program is a two year commitment to cleaning a designated spot every other month.  Our Green hip scarf club will be in charge of making sure the job gets done!

BodyWorks By Chandani now accepts CDs, CD cases and CD packaging to be recycled.  We are a CD drop off center for anyone who would like to recycle their music, burned or data CDs.

As we make this shift to going green, we are looking for ways to make the items we use more environmentally friendly by buying and using items that are organic, recycled and recyclable.

When we starting telling our students our efforts to make BodyWorks By Chandani more green, the response was amazing!  People are happy to see a business actively being more environmentally friendly.  In addition students have asked how they can get involved.  So we have created the Green Hip Scarf club.  A group meeting designed to get belly dancers to be more active in cleaning up Virginia Beach.  Activities include participating in the adopt-a-program, clean the bay day and Earth Day.

We are proud to be supporters of Earth Day in conjunction with the  Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission for 5 years now.  Come see us perform next year!

Many moons ago I was a big environmental preservation advocate.  Anything from being the president of the Environmental Science club in school, to recycling at home to owning protected Rain Forrest so it won't be cut down.  I did get side tracked on my conservation efforts for a while but now I am back and trying harder then ever to make a difference.

How do you ask?

Well I have learned that one person can make a difference.  Every time I buy organic or local, I am making a vote for a more green city.  I recycle at home and am pushing for recycling for all the condos in our building.

We conserve energy by turning off lights, using energy efficient light bulbs, creating low flow toilets, and walking when we can.  In addition I try to grow my own herbs and vegetables (may I reemphasize "try" - sometimes they don't grow).

My latest quest is to attend the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission meetings and hopefully one day to join the board.

I'm not out to save the world, but I am trying to do my part to preserve our planet.
